How to stop free radicals from damaging our skin and bodies
What exactly are free radicals? And no, they are not hippies on motorcycles fresh out of the county lock-up!
These harmful particles are one of the prime causes in the breakdown of overall cellular health, and they are formed when something disrupts our normal cellular activity.
Free-radical damage within cells has been linked to a range of disorders including cancer, arthritis, atherosclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, and diabetes.
From the inside, poor nutrition and other personal choices such as ingesting alcohol, smoking and drug use…
…and from the outside, radiation from the sun, toxic contaminants, and even the air we breathe are constantly attacking our bodies, causing these nasty particles to be born.
In short, free-radicals are abnormal atoms that lack an even number of electrons.
Because of this, they are highly unstable and seek out healthy molecules so that they can “steal” an electron from them,
or “oxidize” them.
The big problem is, after they steal an electron from a healthy molecule, that healthy molecule becomes unstable itself, and then IT seeks other healthy molecules to steal from!
This creates a horrible chain reaction, which “oxidizes” our skin, leaving it dry, dull and lackluster-exactly like an old car’s paint job!
In layman’s terms, the Free Radical Theory of Aging says that the accumulation of damage from these particles over time leads to cellular damage, degenerative diseases and ultimately to aging and death.
So how do you fight this destructive pattern? With antioxidants!
Antioxidants break this destructive cycle and stop healthy cells from becoming damaged ones.
Antioxidant molecules can “donate” an electron to a free-radical, but will remain stable and NOT turn into one! This ends the electron stealing chain reaction.
That’s why antioxidant anti aging products should be our first line of defense against these harmful particles.
